1) Avoid Probate- without an estate plan, your estate may have to go through probate. This court procedure can be time consuming, expensive, as well as intrusive to your surviving family and friends. An estate plan can greatly, if not completely, reduce this exposure.
2) Make decisions about your minor children and your assets- Without an estate plan, the state will determine where your minor children go. Also, your assets will be distributed to your family by the state as well. An estate plan will allow you to make these decisions, even if your not there.
3) Reduce your tax liability- Did you know that both the state and federal government will tax your estate when you die. Its not enough that you have paid income tax during your life, the government wants more. You can avoid a good portion, maybe all of the tax, with an estate plan.
These are just a few reasons why it is important to have an estate plan in place. Do not put this off until its too late!
